The ACNB has been an autonomous entity since the date of separation in August of 1999. Previous to 1999 the ACNB conducted 30 Board examinations in the specialty of neurology for Doctors of Chiropractic who had completed accredited programs of Post Doctoral study in Neurology. The ACNB was one of several Chiropractic specialty boards under the direction of the American Chiropractic Association. It operated in 1984 as the American Board of Chiropractic Neurology and in 1989 it absorbed another American Chiropractic Association Agency Board, The American Chiropractic Academy of Neurology. The American Board of Chiropractic Neurology awarded the Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Neurology (DABCN) and The American Academy of Chiropractic Neurology awarded the Diplomate of the American Academy Chiropractic Neurology (DACAN).
The American Chiropractic Association House of Delegates directed the ACNB to recognize the previous designations of the specialty and to grant only the Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (DACNB) after 1995. The American Chiropractic Association’s House of Delegates further directed the ACNB to ensure that all previous diplomats in neurology (DACAN and DABCN) would be subject to the continuing education and recertification standards of the Diplomates of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board.
In October 2000, the ACNB filed articles of incorporation and became an independent organization filing with the Internal Revenue Service for 501(c) 6 status. The Diplomates of the American Chiropractic Academy of Neurology (DACAN 1989-1994) as well as the Diplomates of the American Board of Chiropractic Neurology (DABCN 1984-1994) are recognized by the ACNB. Neither the DACAN nor the DABCN have been awarded since 1994. Instead, the DACNB is the current certification. The Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (DACNB) and its previous designations (DACAN and DABCN) are the only certifications in the specialty of Neurology recognized by the American Chiropractic Association, The Commission for the Accreditation of Graduate Education in Neurology (CAGEN), The American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Chiropractic Specialties, Insurance Carriers and State Legislative Bodies. The total number of persons certified (all programs) through end of the most recent calendar year since the first person was certified is SEVEN HUNDRED TWELVE (712). There are 207 DACAN Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologists, 123 DABCN Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologists and 382 DACNB Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologists. One individual has passed all three examination boards and three individuals have passed two examination boards. The total number of current diplomates is 300. Several have retired, a few are deceased and some have chosen not to maintain their credentials through the recertification process.
